Jaagte Raho

Image
Jaagte raho is the national cry of night watchmen in India. It has been historically associated with them; whenever the night watchmen would go out on their rounds, they will shout Jaagte Raho as they move along. When I was young, I was told that the watchmen shout Jaagte Raho not to wake up the people whose property they are supposed to protect. No, but they shout Jaagte Raho so as to stay awake themselves. This was told as a metaphor for inviting others to do good deeds. A person should invite others to do good, and speak about doing good. Because by telling others to come to good, we ourselves will get inspired to be good. Just like a night watchman invites others to be awake and to keep vigil, but the purpose of that is to be awake himself. It was a motivating thought. It inspired me to talk to other about doing good things even when I myself would not be translating those same words into actions. Jaagte Raho, I would say to others. And hope, that in some way, i

Prudence Over Habit, or Why Not To Bathe Daily

So it was Saturday night, and alone I sat wondering why we are burdened with the chore of existence. And thinking of chores, I was reminded about another most daunting chore. Having a bath daily. I mean, why waste away so much water and precious pheremones! But then a wave of Nirvana swept across my mind. And I was enlightened ever more. For in that moment of sweet nirvana, I found out the reason for having a bath daily. And now that I have the knowledge, I must pass it on. The knowledge could enable us to optimise the frequency of the activity without being compelled to label a violator of the daily bath ritual a heretic. You see, dead skin cells from the epidermis keep shedding from the human skin. The epidermis is the topmost layer of the skin. Cells on it keep getting replaced by the cells from beneath it. In around thirty days, the skin of a person gets totally replaced by new cells. Snakes collect it and shed it at once. We humans keep shedding little by littl

On Corruption and Benevolent Loot

They were sitting in my hotel room, waiting for Rohit to get ready. In between our discussion about the falling rate of the rupee in comparison to the dollar, somebody took Baba's name and hijacked the conversation. "Do you know sir that Baba had actually died 7 days before his death was announced to the public?" Baba was a prominent politician of the area, now dead. "What do you mean?", I asked. "Baba’s death was announced on the 14th, but he had actually died seven days earlier due to an organ failure." "Why? Why would his family do such a thing?" "It is rumored that it took his family and accountants seven days to clear all evidences wherein Baba could get implicated. In the last 7 days, they cleared all the proofs, took all fingerprints, faked all documents that had to be faked and sent all the money abroad that had to be sent abroad. His body was kept in a sealed casket when it was shown to the people so that t

Marriage Ceremonies, or Let's Make it Large

Marriage ceremonies can be discreet, in a few cases, but in vast majority of cultures and religions, the ceremony is a social affair. In cultures which do not allow extra-marital or premarital relations (which traditionally I think almost all didn’t), the event should be such so as to make the general population aware that two people have been legally wedlock and hence are entitled to stay together without the people’s objection, or better still, with their cooperation. So in a small village, all the village folk could be gathered to proclaim the event. In larger ones, someone’s community or relatives or friends may be invited to attend the event. We have religions like Christianity and Islam where marriages are a relatively quiet affair with the presence of only a few relatives and close friends, generally speaking. Then we have religions like Hinduism and Indian versions of Christianity and Islam, wherein every bloody person who ever got acquainted with the couple or their fa

On Education, or What The Hell Are You Teaching in Schools!

1. Education should make a person better suited to live in the society, irrespective of his vocation, and schools should be the place where that education happens. 2. The learning of anything that does not improve the thought process of the learner towards understanding the nature of his subject is just skill acquisition. _______________________________________ “Education in its general sense is a form of learning in which the knowledge, skills, and habits of a group of people are transferred from one generation to the next through teaching, training, or research.…Any experience that has a formative effect on the way one thinks, feels, or acts may be considered educational.” Type ‘education’ in wikipedia and you get the above definition. Now imagine the experiences of your school days and sit back and think about how much of your education did you get from your school and how much from other sources. The above statement about education implies that education is learning in

Ascetism

A lot of times I feel that the inherent motivation in a person to do something stems from a desire for the privileges that attainment would bring. That privilege could be the love of someone, or societal status, or money, or importance, or the drug of victory, or any combination thereof. And I feel that it is the strong desire for those privileges that keeps people motivated to continue their struggles until they attain their end. Some people labour on in extended hours, sacrifice many moments of pleasure and happiness and give up upon their social obligations in their will to attain that goal. That goal may a school rank or first place in a sports event or a college entrance exam or a position in an upward rank in a company or anything else. A lot of people also do things just for the experience of doing it. It is applicable for exciting things like sky-diving or trekking, visiting a new city or watching a Govinda movie. But I seriously doubt that people may deliberately str

To every people is a term appointed: when their term is reached not an hour (moment) can they cause delay, nor (a moment) can they advance it! - Surah Aaraf verse 34 ------------------------------ “The number you’re trying to reach is either switched off or unavailable. Please try again later” . We had been waiting for him for the past half an hour. We wanted to get worried but were restraining ourselves. Surely he would catch up soon. Three days earlier, on Saturday, Bhan, Masab and I had set out for a week long road trip to Rajasthan under the guidance of Sir Araib. At 12 o’clock in the afternoon, we took a right turn from MG Road onto NH8 and headed out west on the highway. The weather was hot and dry and the sky was bright azure. We had almost 7 hrs of sunshine left to travel to Sambhar Lake. Initially, the heat and the traffic made the going tough. But once we crossed Daruheda, it was the broad expressway and us. Although the day was hot, the roads were clean
