To Read or To Understand...II

This anecdote’s one of my favourites... It’s about Laila and Majnun. As the story goes, Majnun was a poor man in love with a princess called Laila, who he’d never seen but had only heard about. One day in the marketplace, Laila dropped her scarf or sandal or something, and Majnun dear picked it up and took it to her. Again she dropped it and again he picked it for her. And again and again she teased him on. I don’t know the rest of the story, but the crux is what follows. Majnun used to cry and pray to Allah to let him be with Laila. And as i’ve been told, they added the word Rehmatullah Alaih after his name, so he must’ve been a very pious man. So anyway, Majnun used to cry and pray for Laila. One day in his dream he heard Allah say to him, that He could let him be with Laila, no doubt, but He was very fond of Majnun’s tears. “Hum tumhein Laila se mila to den, lekin hamen tumhare aasun bahut pasand hai...” Well, so much for those missing their soulmates...Keep crying!!!

To Read or To Understand...

We come across some nice anecdotes, or kisse, as we’d call them in Urdu, in our day to day lives. Sometimes in the movies also. Here are some of my favourites... Two labourers were sitting when a man approached them and said he’d give them two Dinars per day if they worked for him. They refused. So the man raised his offer to four Dinars. But they still refused. The man raised his offer to six, eight, finally ten Dinars, but the men still refused. Astonished, this man asks them why in the world are they refusing such a lucrative offer? And the men reply, “we’ll only work for you if you pay us one Dinar a day”. That was what their one day’s labour was worth... There’s a hadith i recollect that was told to me by a friend of mine once. It goes something like once a man came to our Prophet (peace be upon him), and told him that there was no blessing (barkat) in his earnings. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked him how much he charged for his services and told him that he was charging too

The Downfall of one Mr.Adil Zaid...

“Well, i am adil zaid, and i fell down…. And it wasn’t a single hurdle that tripped me; for the hurdles were never too high and the climb was never too steep. And my limbs are strong and my passion unrelenting and my will unbending. But who says we only fall when we stuble on our path…Sometimes we just fumble and fall cause we get tired of walking and we can’t allow ourselves to take a rest. Sometimes we deliberate our fall so we can get out of this mad race for the supposed peak. Sometimes we just fall to get out of the race we are no longer inclined to run. Sometimes we fall not when the path gets tough but when our inner self discards all will to move. I’m not a depressive…but i don’t trust happiness. I dont hate people but i dislike being with them too much. How much is too much? I can’t say. People say i’m a poet and a philosopher, but they miss the point. They focus more on my hairstyle than my content. I’m not a bore, although having fun and enjoying myself might not be on the

An Ode to Being Down and Out...

its a weird thing how life can be so undulating in its effects on you, escalating you to dizzying heights just after it has shown you the crevices and the pits, only to take you up again in another vomit inducing rollercoaster ride. but the highs are always uncertain, and the depths have a comforting feel to them that makes you relaxed and feel safe about them. its not that you cant get any lower that relaxes you, for the lows can take you down into places where you'd begin to suffocate within yourself, and noone wants that to happen to them. but its the freedom from prying eyes and worse, from scrutiny that makes you safe. you cease to have the fear of not meeting expectations and of not being able to deliver, or worse, of being felt jealous of or trampling upon others trust on you. when you're low, they all leave you alone. and you dont have any expectations pulling you, or any of those leeches who feed on others success sucking you dry. you can be yourself without any prete
