Cradle of Filth Concert, Palace Grounds, Bangalore, April 23rd, 2011

So, i'm not a junkie, and i don't drink. So why i travelled 4800 KMs just to see Cradle of Filth perform live at Bangalore might amaze some. But there are few things that one is passionate about. And Cradle of Filth is one of them for me.
Cradle of Filth @ Bangalore
The start of the day was auspicious. The train was scheduled to reach Bangalore at 6.30 a.m. I woke up at 6.30 to find that the train was running late, so i went back to sleep. A coach attendant found me sleeping behind the withdrawn curtains at 8.30 a.m. Found out that the train had reached Bangalore City more than an hour ago and had left the station for the washing yard, that i was the only passenger on the train and to top it all, someone had made off with my Hush Puppies as well!

So i walked around two KMs barefoot till i found a place from where i bought a pair of 'Spaax' flip-flops. Had a feeling this was an apt beginning to a bright day ahead...:)

Met up with some old friends during the day. Went to Fanoos for a jumbo roll and then to a place called Ocea near Brigate Road for lunch, the same place where we had had our first Crab two years back. Grandly ordered some tandoori black pomfret, crab meat soup and fish fingers. Just as had happened with the crab, we failed to see the asterisk at the bottom of the menu that read 'as per size', and ended paying up four times the price that was on the menu.

The concert location was confusing to say the least. We walked almost three KMs after parking our bike to get to it. The show was opened by some Indian bands. God knows who. At 6.30, it started raining cats and dogs. I mean, really started pouring down like it was a monsoon shower in July. From 6.30 to 7.30 p.m., we all just stood in the rain, drenched to our, uhm, underwear, listening to a band called Devoid. It was a one of its kind experience. Heavy metal and thundering rain. And the lightning and thunder sometimes gave the stage a nice halo of purple that was, in the wise words of one Mr.WeedEater, awesome man!

As it was pouring down, suddenly from the right of the crowd, we heard a loud chant of F*** yous being hailed out at the rain; their form of protest. Later on, the chant switched version to the age old Hindi version, all to no avail. The rain would not be stopped by shouting some explicative to it (duh!). So the dudes in the crowd got a better idea of fighting the rain. With increased cries of the old favourite explicative, we saw that the crowd had dislodged a big hoarding that had all the sponsors' names, and were using it as a shelter against the rain. And this one actually worked a lot better than just plain words....:D

It was a crazy experience, as we stood in the rain drenched to the bone, standing below a hoarding held up by our collective hands, the smell of cigarette smoke and incense (hehe!) all around, lightning and thunder in the background, listening to Devoid playing some, err, nice songs...

Cradle of Filth came on stage at around 8.30, after a really long wait. But Dani Davey's voice and the songs that they played made it all worthwhile. The setlist was pretty short, as the concert lasted only about an hour and fifteen minutes, and one after the other they played our favorite tracks, including Honey and Sulphur, Lilith Immaculate, Nymphetamine, Her Ghost in the Fog, The Principles of Evil Made Flesh, The Forest Whispers My Name, Ebony Dressed for Sunset, and From the Cradle to Enslave, among a few others that i cant recollect. They didn't play Ctulu Dawn. Pout :(

Did i forget to mention the incident when Dani threw a bottle of beer at the (poor hapless and amazed) guards? Naah, lets not mention that.

Nor did i mention this dude who kept shouting, "c'mon c'mon Danny buoy" as if Dani Davey needed his encouragement....

Nor do i need to mention the ubiquitous connoisseurs and MAs in English Language discussing whether to classify the band as black metal, or progressive black metal or symphonic death metal or blaargh...

Naah, this is one boring post and i am not inclined to continue this miserable narration of an awesome event. Here's to Amandeep Singh, who got introduced to both COF and distortion guitars for the first time (what a way to get initiated!), to Ashutosh Kumar Singh, Vijay Negi sir, black pomfret and Cradle of Filth...
